Within 48 hours of news that Meridian Secondary School is raising money for one of its students, the public has donated close to S$22,000 in total via just one fundraising platform.

The fundraising drive is initiated by Give.asia, a platform that enables donors to give to charities registered in Singapore and around the region.

Meridian Secondary School appealed to the school’s community on Jan. 9 to help raise funds for one of its students who is badly injured following the bus accident in Muar, Malaysia on Dec. 24, 2016.

The Secondary 5 student, Muhd Hilmi Bin Mohd Syed, lost his mother in the tragedy, while his father and sister were also seriously hurt.

He will have to undergo another surgery for his spine, after he had undergone surgery for his spine and elbow.

The school's appeal was signed off by the principal, and was subsequently put online as a call of support for the student.

Give.asia wrote in their call for donations that they are raising funds to defray the cost of medical expenses on behalf of the family.

The fundraising drive, which started on Jan. 11 at 2pm, will run for two weeks and end on Jan. 25, 2017. All funds collected will be given to the student's family via a direct transfer to the bank account of the student's father.

Proof of the transfer will also be provided.

Give.asia also said the fundraising platform does not take any fees from the donations raised via their website.
