In case you missed it, early in the morning on June 14, Lee Kuan Yew's son Lee Hsien Yang (LHY) released a public statement in conjecture with his sister Lee Wei Ling, criticising his brother Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and announcing his plans to leave Singapore for the foreseeable future.
Since then, this little Facebook post has turned into kind of a big deal. Luckily, here at Mothership.sg, we've got the whole thing covered.
Except for one detail, apparently.
LHY left out one crucial piece of information in his original post: where he and his wife Lee Suet Fern (LSF) will be moving to. Up till now, they've both been saying in media interviews that they haven't decided where to go yet.
LHY is the current Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), and LSF is the founder and managing partner of Stamford Law Corporation, now merged into international firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius as Morgan Lewis Stamford.
But, for the time being, there is no way to know for sure what their future holds. All we can do is guess — and so, naturally, that is exactly what we did.
Without further ado, here are our best 5 guesses of where the couple might move to:
1. The United States
This seems like a fairly obvious choice, as the Lee family has sent several children to elite universities across the U.S. in recent years.
Lee Hsien Yang and Lee Suet Fern's eldest son, Li Shengwu, is currently a junior research fellow at Harvard University in Massachusetts, and previously received a PhD from Stanford University in California.
Their second son, Li Huanwu, graduated from the University of Pennyslvania, and their youngest son Li Shaowu is presumed to be studying in the U.S. as well.
America just might offer LHY and LSF the family time they desperately need — nuclear family time, that is.
LHY also attended Stanford University himself, earning a Master of Science in management, so perhaps coming here would offer fond memories not quite related to 38 Oxley Road.
That said, if their main concern is a repressive political climate and grievous abuse of power, the U.S. might actually be a counterproductive choice. Hur hur.
2. England
The UK would be another logical choice, since both LHY and LSF graduated from the University of Cambridge with degrees in engineering science and law, respectively.
This is also (presumably) where they met — so if they happen to be looking to rekindle their romance, England calls!
Instead of following in his parents' footsteps or studying in an American university, their eldest son Shengwu spent his undergraduate years at Oxford, where he was able to show off his debating prowess. This, arguably, has come in handy more than once throughout this saga. But no matter, it's still in England, so it's still rational for the couple to (potentially) move there. Right?
Additionally, the UK's cool climate might provide some refuge from the Singaporean heat — both literal and figurative. Another thing working in the high-powered couple's favour.
3. Australia / New Zealand
During Lee Hsien Yang's 12-year stint as the CEO of Singtel, the company purchased Optus, the second largest telecommunications company in Australia. Today, it is still operating as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singtel.
LHY may not be Singtel's CEO anymore, but perhaps Optus will still have a soft spot for him.
Regardless of whether the couple is planning to work or play there, they would likely be eligible for long-term visas, since they seem to be planning on staying wherever they move to for awhile. Convenient!
And, if LHY is looking to kill some free time, he could always hunt down Anton Casey over in Perth, or take some advice from us and go sightseeing.
4. Hong Kong
This might be a slightly wilder guess, but it's a possibility nonetheless. After all, it's not terribly far from home, and the environment is more similar to Singapore than any other country on this list... if that's what the couple happens to be looking for.
Hong Kong would be familiar to Suet Fern, at least, who has served on the board of companies with listings there. Currently, she plays a key role in global law firm Morgan Lewis & Bockius, and will be spending a lot of time between offices in Singapore and Hong Kong.
Previously, her main gig was in Singapore, and Hong Kong was simply a business trip destination. Perhaps now it will become the other way around.
Plus, while we're all waiting for Gong Cha to return to Singapore, LHY and LSF will have access to an abundance of it.
5. Scotland
And, finally, if the couple are really running out of options, they could always join Lee Wei Ling on her Scottish island holiday, where the internet connection is "erratic and slow".
If that can't provide them an escape from this whole saga we don't know what will.
(And yes, we are aware that Scotland is part of the UK.)
