Who wants to be a millionaire?

The annual Hong Bao draw for Singapore Pools will be held on Feb. 10 at 9pm.

The top prize is S$12 million and Singapore Pools has extended opening hours for its outlets so punters who didn't have time during lunch today to join snaking queues to place their bets can do so later:

If buying Quick Pick (computer-generated numbers) is not your thing, soon-to-be analyst Jake Teo has gone to the trouble of pulling data from Singapore Pools and figuring out which six numbers have featured in top prizes the most times.

According to Teo, "the numbers 21 (occurred 60 times), 8 (56 times), 19 (56 times), 11 (54 times), 31 (54 times), 6 (53 times) are the top 6 numbers (note I'm just merely computing the frequency of each individual number occurring in the Group 1 draws)."

Teo's blog, Map Attack, has also come up with an interactive dashboard that presents other Toto related statistics, like which location has the highest number of winners (click the image to access the dashboard):

Teo also tried to answer the golden question: Is Quick Pick Better?

"Well, out of 153 Group 1 jackpot winners, an overwhelming majority of 138 won using Quick Pick. Yea, those numbers that you dreamt of rarely win. You are better off letting the system random-pick for you."

The other reasoning could be because of the sheer number of times punters have chosen to go for Quick Pick as it is more convenient than filling up the lottery ticket individually.

If you're schooled in statistics, then you would know that past draws have no bearing on what numbers come next. Each draw is independent and is a fresh start.

The same goes for location, whether you buy Quick Pick or pick your own numbers, or the colour of underwear you wear as you buy the tickets.

So even if you pick 6, 8, 11, 19, 21, and 31 for your lucky numbers tonight, know that they have an equal chance of winning as any other number.

The only way to increase your chances of winning is to buy the different System bets.

For example, a System 12 bet will give you a 1 in 15,134 chance of winning. That will cost you S$924 though.

A regular S$1 bet will give you a 1 in 13,983,816 chance.
