Nathan Hartono tops Sing!China semi-finals and qualifies for the finals

No mouth trumpet this time.

For his latest performance on Sing!China which aired on 30 September, Nathan Hartono performed a medley of The Eagles' Desperado and Angus Tung's 忘不了 (Can't Forget).

His performance received the highest score (93.65) for the evening and entered the finals of the competition.

This means Hartono is the only mentee of Jay Chou's who qualified for the finals. Well done Hartono!

However, breaking from tradition, Hartono chose a soft rock piece which we felt was a departure from his sunshine filled jazz-type renditions -- which he executed with aplomb in previous rounds. Check out the gifs of his performance below.

Hartono started out with a quiet 'Desperado'

Which quickly escalated into the chorus. Here, he also gets a nod from his mentor Jay Chou.

The crowd gave an appreciative applause when Hartono transitioned into the Chinese song. Clearly, him being able to switch between English and Mandarin sits well with Chinese viewers.

Perhaps this performance was meant to show that Hartono is capable of emoting beyond jazz hands, or maybe demonstrate his ability to juggle a different genre.

Either ways, we enjoyed his performance and range but we missed his mouth trumpet though.
