An engineer in Kuching, Sarawak lost RM11,530 (S$3,320) after being scammed into buying tickets for the sold-out Taylor Swift concert in Singapore.

According to Sarawak's police commissioner Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, the 50-year-old man came across a listing on Carousell on Jul. 6 selling the concert tickets, The Star reported.

He then purchased three tickets at the price of RM11,530 (S$3,320) and transferred the money to the scammer between Jul. 6 and 7.

The man later realised that he had been scammed after he failed to contact the seller to claim his purchased tickets.

He then made a police report for further action, according to the New Straits Times (NST).

Ticket scams

Earlier last week, a woman from Singapore was also scammed of S$700 after she tried to buy two Taylor Swift concert tickets from a seller on Carousell.

She had transferred the money to the seller but did not get her tickets nor a reply.

In response, Carousell said that ticket buyers on their platform "are encouraged to arrange for physical meet-ups to verify the authenticity of the tickets before making any payment."

A note on ticketing website Ticketmaster Singapore said it is the official ticketing partner for all Singapore shows, and it cannot guarantee the legitimacy of tickets purchased elsewhere.

Swift ticket wars

Jul. 7 was a very important date for many Taylor Swift fans in Singapore.

Many Swifties formed queues outside SingPost outlets across the island more than 48 hours before the tickets went on sale.

Prior to the general sale, more than a million people were in the virtual queue for UOB presale tickets on Jul. 5.

The pop star will be performing for a total of six nights at the Singapore National Stadium in March 2024.

As this will be her only Southeast Asian stop as part of her The Eras tour, tickets were especially in demand.
