Huang and Yeh wish for Ashton to have healthy relationships with both his parents.

Having had her son stay with her since the divorce, the former pop star said that it was only fair for Ashton, who no doubt missed Yeh, to spend some time with his dad.

"As much as it breaks my heart to be away from him, I am happy that he gets to spend time with his dad. For 10 years, I have had the most precious gift of time with him."

Huang told Zaobao that the decision to let Ashton go to Japan was made half a year ago.

Yeh will be working in Tokyo for a few years, while Ashton will attend international school there.

Huang said that she has prepared Ashton to assimilate well into a different culture.

She told him to "live bravely and treat people kindly", and taught him what to do if he ever encountered bullying.

The hardest goodbye

One of the hardest things any parent can do is say goodbye to their child.

For Huang, the separation was made even harder with her son's tears.

As Huang revealed to Zaobao, the night before Ashton left, he cried and said that he didn't want to leave.

The day after he flew on Apr. 15, Huang said that he cried himself to sleep again.

"He sent me a text message at 11 o'clock last night saying that he missed me very much, so I quickly called him, told him some happy things, and told him bedtime stories."

"Stay happy"

Before he left, Ashton designed matching t-shirts for himself and his mother.

According to Ashton, the words "Stay Happy" printed on the shirts were a reminder to his mother to keep smiling, despite not having her baby boy by her side.

"I saw the T-shirt, and I was crying," Huang. told Zaobao.

Huang stated that she and Yeh have yet to decide when Ashton will return to Singapore, but the ex-singer believes her son's heart of gold will let him find happiness wherever he is in the world.

"I hope I have raised him with integrity, honesty and most of all, to be a kind, gracious person. Ashton, wherever you are, you will always have my unconditional love and support, near or far, I will always be here for you."
