A 74-year-old security officer was repeatedly assaulted by a condominium resident in Potong Pasir on Apr. 14 after witnessing an altercation between his assailant and a taxi driver outside the guardhouse.
This incident was made public by the Union of Security Employees via a Facebook post today (Apr. 21).
According to the union, the security officer was left injured and bleeding as a result of the assault.
He is currently on medical leave, and his company is taking care of his medical expenses.
The union has helped the 74-year-old file a police report on the incident.
Its General Secretary, Raymond Chin, and Mediation Services Supervisor, Murugason, also visited his home on Apr. 19 and presented him with quick relief vouchers.
Harsher penalty for abusers
At the end of the Facebook post, the union highlighted that individuals who harass and assault security officers would face harsher penalties under the Private Security Industry Act, which was enhanced in May 2022.
Individuals convicted of assaulting or using criminal force against a security officer could face a jail term of up to two years or a fine of up to S$7,500, or both.
The union reiterated that it stands firmly against acts of abuse on security officers and will work closely with authorities to ensure that acts of abuse are attended to.
It also promised to offer officers its fullest support to tide them through.
Third case of abuse within April attended by the union
This case involving the 74-year-old security officer is the third case of abuse that the Union of Security Employees has attended to in April.
On Apr. 3, a male BMW driver was filmed berating a security officer at Thomson Grand condominium after his car wheel was clamped for allegedly parking improperly in the compound.
He was seen banging the glass panel of the guardhouse and hurling insults at the officers, including, "Since you all like to make things difficult for others so much, just get sick, as you are poor and like to die."
On Apr. 14, the union also revealed that a tenant at WCEGA Plaza attempted to snatch away a security officer's phone when he tried to record the former speaking aggressively to the Complex Manager and demanding the release of the wheel clamps on their vehicle.
Earlier that day, the tenant's vehicle was wheeled clamped because it was blocking the fire escape route.
