Cafe Lilac by Whisking Bakes has reopened.

It's been around for some time now, but recently renovated its space to become prettier and cosier, and now has an expanded menu.

As its name implies, the cafe features a lot of taro in its food—even for some savoury items.

The best part: most of the menu is under S$10, save for a couple of desserts.

They also don't charge Goods and Services Tax (GST) nor service charge, which means menu prices are nett.

The catch, though, is that portions are relatively small, but they're enough for people with bird-like appetites (i.e. me).

What to eat here

The offerings are quite a mixed bag, and not your typical cafe food.

You'll find a few sandos (S$5.50 each) on the savoury menu, alongside things like a teriyaki chicken breast wrap (S$7.50) and Korean army stew ramyeon (S$6.50).

We got the:

  • All-day Mini Breakfast (S$8.50)
  • HK-style Nissin Noodles (S$6)
  • Lilac Latte (S$6.50)
  • Sparkling Yuzu (S$5)
  • Taro Mochi Swiss Roll (S$6.50)

Taste-wise everything was quite decent (can't really go wrong with Nissin noodles to be fair), and the presentation was cute too.

The Lilac Latte — taro and milk, made with taro paste at the bottom— is novel, but got a bit too sweet. It reminds us slightly of the traditional dessert orh nee.

The Swiss roll was cute and fluffy, and we're biased towards items with mochi in them so we particularly liked its chewy, stretchy core.

However, as mentioned, portions are relatively small, and you won't be finding things like porcini ai fungi or brown butter sage baked salmon at 93 degrees with sous vide egg or whatever on the menu—but that's expected (and fine), considering the prices.

Desserts can cost as much as, or even more than the mains, but that's what they specialise in.

For those of you who are all about the vibes, the cafe does have a nice aesthetic and ambience.
