A 61-year-old bus driver pleaded not guilty in court after he was charged for his role in a traffic accident in Pasir Ris on Jan. 19, 2021 that saw a 33-year-old woman sustain serious injuries after being knocked down.

Tan Phuay Khoo, 61, allegedly drove an SBS Transit bus along Pasir Ris Drive 2 and was turning right to Pasir Ris Drive 1 when he collided with a pedestrian.

The victim was seriously injured after the accident and had her left leg amputated.

According to Shin Min Daily News, she underwent two surgeries and was hospitalised for four months.

Tan pleaded not guilty to a charge under the Road Traffic Act for causing grievous hurt by driving without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road.

The bus driver was accused of making a discretionary right turn while the traffic light was showing green without any right turn arrow, and he had failed to keep a proper lookout.

Court proceedings

At the start of the trial on Apr. 4, the prosecution called the doctor in charge of the victim's rehabilitation to the stand.

The doctor, a senior consultant at Changi General Hospital, testified that the woman was seriously injured after the accident.

She suffered from cuts on her forehead, lacerations to her left foot, and fractures to her legs and spine.

The doctor also said doctors tried to save her left thigh by amputating the part below her left knee first.

However, they later discovered insufficient blood supply to the left thigh and removed it with a second operation.

The woman requires a prosthesis on her left leg.

Other than the permanent disability, she is also suffering from mental trauma.

If convicted, Tan may be fined up to S$5,000, jailed for up to two years or both, and faces a disqualification of no less than five years.
