Winning lottery prizes does not always lead to happy endings, as seen from previous instances of cut ties and a relationship rollercoaster.

Here's another example.

A man in Thailand recently accused his wife of hiding a lottery prize worth 12 million baht (S$470,000) from him, according to local media Thaiger.

However, his wife insisted that they had already broken up a few years ago. She is now married to a police officer, Sanook News reported.

Husband's side of story

The 47-year-old man, named Narin, went to seek assistance from a well-known local lawyer, Narong Kaewphet, on Mar. 11 to file a lawsuit against his wife.

It was reported that he had married the 43-year-old woman, named Chaweewan, 20 years ago. He revealed that they have three daughters together.

Narin detailed that their family was in a debt of more than 2 million baht (S$78,000) when they moved to South Korea in 2014 to earn money to pay back the debt, Thaiger reported.

After the rest of his family returned to Thailand, Narin remained in South Korea and claimed to be sending over approximately 27,000 baht (S$1,055) to 30,000 baht (S$1,170) monthly for family expenses.

He then heard from his daughters that Chaweewan had won a 12 million baht (S$470,000) lottery prize but hid it from him.

She apparently ignored him when he tried to get in touch.

Shocked by her actions

Narin returned to Thailand on Mar. 3, with the intent to confront Chaweewan about the lottery prize.

That's when Narin found out that Chaweewan had married another man a few days before his return.

According to Thaiger, this was what Narin said after discovering about Chaweewan's marriage:

“I was shocked and did not know what to do. I am disappointed. I did not expect that my wife of 20 years would do this to me. I only had 60,000 baht (S$2,345) left in my bank account because I gave money to her every month. I want to call out for justice and the money that I deserve.”

While Narin claimed that Chaweewan is his wife, he admitted that they did not sign an official marriage certificate.

Wife’s side of story

On the other hand, Chaweewan filed a complaint against Narin for defamation, Thaiger reported.

She claimed that she did not hide the prize money from him and that he had phoned her in 2019 to break up, according to Sanook News.

However, Narin said that he did not know about the break up.

She also remarked that she had never received a big sum of money from Narin, and their daughters only received 3,000 baht (S$117) to 4,000 baht (S$156) rather than the figure he mentioned.

Under investigation

According to the lawyer representing Narin, he would have the right of money despite not having an official marriage certificate, as long as their relationship is well-acknowledged by their friends and relatives.

That said, Chaweewan claimed that even their neighbours know about their break up.

Narin’s case is undergoing investigation by Thai police and relevant parties, Thaiger reported.
