Nan Rong Chee Cheong Fun, which sells S$1 chee cheong fun at Bendemeer Food Centre, has reopened.
This was after it was reported that the stall had to close down following the death of the elderly stall owner, who fell at home in the middle of the night and passed away about two-and-a-half months ago.
The deceased stall owner, affectionately known as Uncle Chee Cheong Fun, was 83.
The stall’s reopening was highlighted in a post in the Food We Eat N Share in SG Facebook group on March 23.
Family at the helm
Two women were seen running the stall.
The menu indicated that the chee cheong fun was still sold for S$1 each, but the fried bee hoon appeared to be no longer available.
Shin Min Daily News reported that the two women at the helm now are the wife and niece-in-law of the deceased stall owner.
The stall owner passed away in the afternoon on Jan. 3.
The day before, he had gone to work and returned home, only to suffer a fall at about 2am.
The younger woman, 46, told Shin Min that she has been a hawker for 20 years, a profession she took up after marrying into the family.
This is the first time she is making chee cheong fun and running the stall though.
She and her husband ran a dessert stall at Old Airport Road Food Centre.
As it was a pity to shut the chee cheong fun stall down, she was roped in to help out to keep the legacy alive.
Maintain original taste
It was reported that the stall began operating again on March 16.
This was only after the niece-in-law trained under the deceased stall owner's wife for days and relied on the recipe book that was passed down to get the food up to scratch to maintain the original taste.
The stall sells about 200 to 300 servings of chee cheong fun from 6am until the shop closes at noon, it was reported.
