Three weeks after they got married, Singaporean couple Muhammad Zahid Abdul Gaffar, 29, and Yasmin Abdullah, 26, met with a serious accident along Tampines Expressway (TPE).
Yasmin, who was riding pillion, succumbed to her injuries, while her husband Zahid is currently in hospital recovering from several surgeries.
Accident with another motorcycle and minibus
On the morning of Feb. 20, 2023, the couple were riding on Zahid's motorcycle along TPE when they got into an accident with another motorcycle and a minibus.
Yasmin was unconscious when she was conveyed to Changi General Hospital. She subsequently passed away.
Zahid was also taken to hospital conscious.
The 54-year-old male minibus driver was arrested for careless driving causing death.
The other 31-year-old male motorcyclist assisted police in investigations.
He was sending her to work
According to Berita Harian (BH), Zahid was sending Yasmin to work that morning.
Yasmin worked as a dental assistant at Upper East Coast Road, while Zahid's job allowed him to work from home.
Speaking to BH, Yasmin's 64-year-old father, Abdullah Sunyar, said: "[Zahid] would always send [Yasmin] to work even though he works from home."
Abdullah added that his late daughter's wedding was "the sweetest memory" for her as she had always dreamt of getting married.
Yasmin and Zahid got married on Jan. 29, 2023 at Orchid Country Club.
"Losing her felt like I lost everything"
Yasmin had also hoped to further her education and purchase a house after she got married, Abdullah told BH.
She suffered from Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, and was forced to pause her studies after receiving her diploma to earn money to pay for her medical bills.
"Despite suffering from Crohn's disease, she was always smiling, she was always cheerful," said Abdullah.
Yasmin is Abdullah's youngest child.
Her older sister, Aliah Fatin, told BH that Yasmin was a "caring and funny" person.
"Losing her felt like I lost everything," she added.
Family and friends asking for help
Following the accident, Zahid and Yasmin's tragic story circulated on various social media platforms.
On Feb. 21, Zahid's older sister Zahidah Abdul Gaffar wrote in a Facebook post:
"My brother's wife passed away in a motorcycle accident yesterday while my brother is seriously injured but is in stable condition in the hospital. Seeking your prayers for the second death in our family this month."
Other social media updates from fellow motorcycle riders and friends showed that Yasmin was buried at Pusara Aman cemetery on Feb. 21.
BH posted a video showing Yasmin's coffin leaving her place of residence at Pasir Ris.
According to another Instagram post which has since been removed, funds are currently being raised for Zahid and Yasmin's family.
