An Indonesian woman, who went missing, was eventually found in the belly of a reticulated python.

Went to work, but failed to return home

According to CNN Indonesia, the Indonesian woman, Jahrah, tapped trees for a living.

On Oct. 23 morning, the 54-year-old headed for the rubber plantation near her house in the Jambi province, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia as she usually did.

When Jahrah failed to return home by evening time, her husband realised that something was amiss and went looking for her.

However, all he managed to find were her sandals, jacket, headscarf, torch and machete, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

6.7m snake found with bloated stomach

Jahrah's family reported her as missing to the local authorities, and a handful of villagers conducted search parties to look for her.

On Oct. 24 morning, a day after she disappeared, the villagers came across a massive snake resting with an engorged stomach.

This led them to suspect that the reptile had eaten the woman, and they proceeded to capture the snake and killed it.

The villagers' suspicions were confirmed after they spliced the 6.7m long snake open.

Much to their horror, they found the woman's body in the belly of the reptile.

Suspected to be a reticulated python

According to Yahoo News, Jahrah's body was found largely intact and undigested, indicating that the woman was likely swallowed whole and fairly recently.

A snake conservationist and director of the Indonesia Herpetofauna Foundation told The Washington Post that he suspected a reticulated python was likely responsible.

He said the species is the only reptile large enough to have consumed an adult human inhabiting the Jambi province on the island of Sumatra.

Reticulated pythons are one of the few species of snake that preys on humans, but such instances are rare.

They prefer preying on smaller animals, which they ambush with a nonvenomous bite, before constricting and suffocating them to death.

The snakes have flexible ligaments around their jaws, which allow them to swallow their prey whole.

However, python habitats are increasingly coming under threat due to deforestation and human encroachment, making encounters between pythons and humans more common in Indonesia, according to snake experts.

More snakes in village

The village chief said the snake snatched Jahrah with its jaws, before slowly suffocating the woman to death, Yahoo News wrote.

However, SCMP reported that no one witnessed the woman being eaten.

Jahrah remains was buried.

Other equally large snakes have also been sighted, according to the village chief, who said one of them was potentially more than 8m long and killed two goats recently.
