The body of a 67-year-old man who lived alone was found in his flat in Toa Payoh.

It was already in a state of decomposition.

The man's body was found on Jan. 13, at about 9:45am, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The man was staying in a rental unit on the 12th floor of the Block 170 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh.

When a Shin Min reporter showed up at the unit at 1pm on the day of the incident, the police were already there and had cordoned off the area.

Another elderly neighbour smelled stench

An 82-year-old neighbour, identified as Lin, who lives on the same floor, said he initially detected a stench emanating along the corridor that smelled like a dead animal.

This occurred days before the body was discovered.

He then realised that the smell came from the deceased man's unit.

At first, he didn't care, so he didn't knock on the other party's door, Lin said.

Something was wrong

By Jan. 11, two days before the body was found, Lin said he noticed that something was wrong.

So, he went to the care centre for the elderly just downstairs the block to ask for help from volunteers.

Apparently nothing was done after the first visit as the smell persisted.

Sought help again

On Jan. 13 morning, the elderly neighbour went to ask the volunteers for help again.

A volunteer went upstairs to knock on the door, but no one responded.

The police were called in after that.

Previous case

Just a few weeks ago, the body of a man in a state of decomposition was discovered by the police in another public housing flat in Toa Payoh on Boxing Day, Dec. 26.
