A National Museum of Singapore exhibition, "Home, Truly: Growing Up with Singapore, 1950s to the Present", is open to the public for free until Oct. 3, 2021.

In collaboration with The Straits Times as part of the newspaper's 175th anniversary, it aims to revisit the moments in the past and present Singapore that shape the identity and collective memory of the nation through photographs and artefacts.

It was launched in Dec. 19, 2020.

Exhibition space

The exhibition is held at the Exhibition Gallery at the basement level of the National Museum.

1. Open Doors

This section showcases the influence of the immigrant and multicultural past on Singapore and the meaning of home to different people.

This section also boasts white and pink walls, a seating area, and geometric wall cut-outs that may be useful for your next Instagram picture.

2. Coming Home

The last section of the exhibition, this reflection space invites visitors to share their own meaning of home that will be projected on a screen.

It also features round tables and stools that resemble those at HDB void decks.

3. Laying the Foundations

This section shows how the people experienced nation-building through the implementation of foundational policies in housing, economy, defence, healthcare, and infrastructure, among others.

4. Moving in

This section highlights the common everyday experiences and memories such as school, hawker food, and recreation spaces.

5. Living Together

This section looks at how Singaporeans navigated and overcame the challenges of living together in a shared space while settling into a new home.

6. Sturdy through Storms

This area shows how Singapore remained united through the crises in the past decades like floods, the British Military Withdrawal, financial crises and SARS.

While you're at the National Museum, keep a lookout for the reconstructed HDB- a mama shop that contains the nostalgic snacks and toys of the good old days.
