A woman in Singapore helped pay for 105 packs of chicken rice in order to help a pair of elderly hawkers at Chinatown Complex Food Centre in their time of difficulty.

In a post on Facebook group "Let's go, Singapore", Facebook user Sammi Siek wrote that she decided to show them some support after learning about their plight.

The hawkers told Lianhe Wanbao that a man had ordered over 20 packs of chicken rice on credit, but had failed to return and make payment even though he promised them to do so after receiving his government payout.

The elderly couple, however, did not take this to heart, saying the man might have had his own difficulty.

After deducting the 20 or so packs of chicken rice from the 105 packs she paid for, Siek estimated that the remaining balance amounted to 75 packs, which she said those in need can come forward and get for themselves.

The free packets of chicken rice would be given out on a first come first served basis.

Siek also urged others who live in the vicinity to patronise the stall at Chinatown Complex.

Kind elderly hawkers cheated

With work from home as a default, a lack of tourists and the restrictions on dining in, hawkers in Singapore have had to bear the brunt of the pandemic's preventive measures.

However, this did not stop two elderly hawkers from doing their best to give back to society.

To help the needy and those similarly affected by the pandemic, the duo slashed the price of their Hainanese Chicken Rice to a mere S$2 per plate, according to Wanbao. 

In addition, after further tightening measures were announced on May 16, the pair decided to reduce the price for their roasted chicken, selling half of it for just S$6.

In addition, the pair allowed their cash-strapped customers to buy their food on credit and return to pay after.

The elderly couple revealed that they are barely making ends meet as they are not making a profit, adding that they hoped to sustain their business with more sales despite not making much.

They told Wanbao: "If business doesn't turn for the better, we might not be able to go on."
