Desmond Lim Bak Chuan will relinquish his post as Chairman of the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) after the upcoming general election.

Speaking to Mothership on June 27, the 53-year-old principal engineer confirmed that this will be the last general election where he will lead the SDA team.

However, once he steps down from the Chairman position, he will still remain in politics. Lim said that this was part of a succession plan, and he will still be around to mentor the others in SDA.

Lim said, "SDA is not Desmond Lim alone and there are many members that are good."

He added, "The announcement is to assure the voters of Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC that we have talented people like (Harminder Pal Singh) together with me to continue with SDA to serve them better."

Lim also said that this would allow younger members to rise to senior positions.

Lim has been walking the ground together with his fellow SDA members in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, the only constituency they will contest in the upcoming general election.

The lead-up to GE2020 has seen a number of familiar political personalities announce their departure.

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong of the People's Action Party and Low Thia Khiang, former Workers' Party chief will not stand in the upcoming contest.

Deputy Speaker Charles Chong and Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, both from the PAP, will also not be standing.
