Hougang MP Png Eng Huat will not be contesting in this General Election, and will be passing on the baton to Workers' Party's Dennis Tan.

Png, who served as Hougang's MP since 2012, did a walkabout around Hougang during the weekend with Tan.

On Sunday (June 28), they were joined by Low Thia Khiang, who was previously chief of WP and MP for Hougang from 1991 to 2011.

Hougang is Singapore's longest-held opposition ward.

In a Facebook post on June 28, Tan said that he knows he has “more to learn”.

He also thanked Low and Png for "walking with him" and said that "he will take it from here".

Png's Hougang journey

On June 29, Png wrote a Facebook post reminiscing on the deep bonds he had forged with Hougang, as well as his relationship with Low.

He said that he was first invited to visit Low's meet-the-people (MPS) session in 2006. The chat with Low turned into a "14-year involvement and friendship with the party".

Png also shared anecdotes from his time interacting Hougang residents.

For instance, he said that Low left him his MPS desk. But when one of the drawers fell out, a resident gave him an extra desk from her home.

He also spoke about the generosity of residents, who would brew tonics and share cakes and food with him.

"The potluck parties at the void decks are legendary," he said. "There can never be another Hougang in Singapore."

Png thanked the residents and said that during his time, he has found out that "one can never choose Hougang... Hougang must choose you first".
