If you missed April's pink supermoon, the largest supermoon of 2020, fret not.

Another supermoon will be occurring on May 7, and it will be the last supermoon of the year.

"Super flower moon"

Thursday's full supermoon has also been dubbed a "super flower moon", and contrary to its name, will not entail any sort of resemblance to flowers.

Instead, it was so named as it appears during spring season when flowers are blooming, according to BBC's science magazine Science Focus.

May's supermoon has also gone by other names, such as "corn planting moon", "milk moon" and the "Vesak Festival moon", the latter name arising as it is concurrent with Vesak Day.

A full or new moon is called a supermoon when it coincides with the point of orbit at which they are closest to Earth.

Supermoons can be up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than a regular full moon, reported CNET.

NASA stated that the supermoon will appear on May 7 at around 6:45am EDT, which is around 6:45pm in Singapore.

The moon will also appear full for around three days this time around till Friday, so you can start dusting off your binoculars tonight.

Next supermoon in 2021

According to NASA, there can be three or four supermoons in a year.

Including the pink supermoon in April, there was a previous supermoon in early March and another in February as well.

The "super flower moon" will be the last supermoon of 2020, and you will only get a chance to see the next full supermoon in April 2021.
