S'porean man, 20, charged for murder at Punggol Field

If found guilty, he faces the death penalty.

A 20-year-old man was charged in court on Sunday, May 17 for the murder of a 38-year-old man at Punggol Field on May 10.

The man was found injured along Punggol Field Road at around 11pm and was taken to Sengkang General Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Appeared in court via video link

The accused, Surajsrikan Diwakar Mani Tripathi, appeared in court via a video link on Sunday (May 17) morning. In the video, he could be seen wearing a mask.

He did not have anything to say after his charges were read to him, and appeared to be calm.

Police had announced on May 16 that they had identified and arrested a 20-year-old Singaporean man in connection to the murder at 2:45am on May 16, following investigations, ground enquiries and review of CCTV footage.

According to the police news release, preliminary investigations revealed that the man is not known to the victim, and is believed to have allegedly acted alone.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Will return to court on June 5

The man was charged with murder under Section 302(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If found guilty, he faces the death penalty.

Prosecution applied for the charged to be remanded for psychiatric evaluation for three weeks, which the judge granted.

He will be remanded at Changi Prison Complex Medical Centre, and is due to return to court on June 5.
