There have been several WhatsApp messages circulating recently about fines imposed on those who don't mask up outside.

Mothership has verified with the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources that this is not true.

Messages detailing fines for "repeat offenders"

The messages, some of which are written in Mandarin, urges viewers to wear their masks out "tomorrow".

It claims that those caught without a mask for the first time would be given a warning, while second and third-time "offenders" would be subsequently fined S$50 and S$150 respectively.

It ends off by saying that those without masks can collect the items at community clubs.

No mention of fines in MOH FAQ

These statements however, are false.

According to a Ministry of Health FAQ on safe distancing measures, members of the public are advised to stay home and avoid interaction with those outside of one's household.

For those who need to leave the house and are unable to avoid close contact with others, they can wear masks to protect themselves and others.

There is no mention of any fines.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced during his national address on Apr. 3 that Singaporeans will no longer be discouraged from wearing masks, an about turn from their previous stance that only those feeling unwell should mask up.

Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong also clarified the change in stance recently, saying this was due to new developments of the Covid-19 situation in Singapore.

There have been a rise of asymptomatic cases and local transmissions, which contributed to the government's decision.

The World Health Organisation, from which Singapore previously based their stance on, has also been reviewing its Covid-19 guidelines.
