Japan's Narita airport’s baggage claim arrea has become a "cardboard box hotel" for arriving international passengers with pending Covid-19 test results.

Cardboard beds set up for arriving passengers

The temporary set-up by the Tokyo airport provides a waiting area for international passengers who cannot be picked up by family and friends in a private car, Forbes reported.

Passengers are not allowed to use public transport, nor taxis. They typically stay for one to two days, until their test results are out.

All returnees from the following regions are subjected to "strengthened quarantine", according to the Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

The bed frames are made of cardboard.

The design has been used during disasters such as earthquakes, when people needed to be housed elsewhere temporarily.

The beds are lined with mattresses (futons), which costs around 15,000 yen (S$138.45) each, according to Twitter user @wasabi1094.

An online review by a passenger who arrived at Narita Airport from Vietnam revealed that the bed was "pretty good".
