Singapore has banned public gatherings with the elevated safe distancing measures.

And this means public spaces, such as playgrounds, public benches and sports areas, have been taped up.

People are also advised to go out only to do "essential things", and to keep a safe distance from others.

These restrictions mean that leaving the house to meet your boyfriend or girlfriend, or to go to their houses (unless you live together), is technically in violation of the law.

It appears that one couple in Singapore didn't get the memo. In a photo that was uploaded to Facebook, the couple is seen hanging out at some benches with what appears to be some drinks, including coke and a bottle of whisky.

The entire area is cordoned off with tape.

According to a second photo, the couple was subsequently approached by two police officers.

The man is seen filling up some papers, supervised by an officer, while another officer checks their IC.

The photos have been circulated on social media in Facebook groups as well as on Twitter.

[UPDATE Apr. 15, 11:45am: Adding statement from Police]

Fined for breaching safe distancing measures

In response to Mothership's queries, the police said that they received multiple calls from a member of the public on Apr. 14 informing them that two persons were sitting on a bench that had been cordoned off.

The incident took place at Blk 8A Upper Boon Keng Road.

A 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were sitting on the bench within the cordoned area.

Police added that they were each issued a composition fine of S$300 for breaching safe distancing measures. They were advised to adhere to the measures, and left the area thereafter.

Police enforcement

On Apr. 13 alone, over 2,900 Enforcement Officers (EOs) and ambassadors have been deployed, with police assistance required in cases of uncooperative individuals.

The police has also clarified that they have not conducted road blocks specifically to enforce the elevated safe distancing measures.

However, they said that if the police come across motorists and passengers flouting the elevated safe distancing measures when conducting such road blocks, they may take enforcement action.
