ActiveSG sport halls at Pasir Ris, Jurong West, Clementi and Hougang will be activated to house foreign workers who provide essential services, but do not have Covid-19 symptoms.
According to a statement made by Sport Singapore, workers will be progressively housed at these sport halls, starting from Friday (Apr. 17).
One of several alternative housing arrangements for foreign workers
Sport Singapore said that it will implement strict protocols to manage the foreign workers' entry and presence at these Sport Centres.
"There is an urgent need to provide alternative living areas for foreign workers who provide essential services, and do not have Covid-19 symptoms," said Sport Singapore.
This is not the first alternative housing arrangement made for foreign workers in Singapore, amidst the current surge in the number of foreign workers affected by Covid-19.
On Apr. 9, 1,300 healthy foreign workers moved into vacant premises at Jurong Camp II and Bedok Camp II, under the instruction of the Ministry of National Development.
500 foreign workers were also housed in a floating hotel that was seen drifting past Pulau Ubin.
On Apr. 16, Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean also shared images of Changi Exhibition Centre being converted into a facility to house Covid-19 patients who are recovering from the virus, or only show mild symptoms.
Similarly, the government has also begun assessing the feasibility of using two cruise ships as temporary accommodation for foreign workers.
