Malaysian workers who were spotted rough-sleeping in Singapore due to the recent Malaysia lockdown were rendered immediate assistance by NTUC's Migrant Workers' Centre (MWC) team.

The team were embarking on the first night of a two-night special operation to help unassisted Malaysian workers, seeking them out in popular migrant worker hangouts.

Previously, a team from the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) helped shelter Malaysian workers at Jurong East Sports Hall, as well as providing them with essential items.

The team covered 25 locations on March 19

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu reassured Singaporeans in a Facebook post that stranded Malaysian workers in Singapore who were rough-sleeping were being given help.

According to Fu, the NTUC MWC team and 40 Ambassadors covered 25 locations on March 19, including places such as Tuas, Little India, Kranji and Yishun.

They also covered all MRT station fringe areas near these locations.

The team is expected to continue their operations on March 20.

Singaporeans have come forward to offer supplies to these Malaysian workers

In her Facebook post, Fu said that two homeless Malaysians found were referred through the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to temporary relief centres run by MSF in Yio Chu Kang and Jurong East Sports Halls for immediate housing.

There were also a group of around 30 Malaysians congregating in the open, who assured the NTUC MWC team that they were merely chatting in the public areas, and that they were provided for.

The team provided their collaterals to this group of Malaysians, in order to allow them to easily seek for help if they encountered problems.

According to Fu, Singaporeans have come forward to offer sleeping bags, food and toiletries to the Malaysian workers who are caught in a predicament due to the recent lockdown, with some delivering these items to the sports hall at Jurong East.

She thanked Singaporeans for being gracious and taking action when necessary, and expressed her wish that employers will do their best to help these workers.
