Premier League clubs are preparing for the football season to be prematurely suspended as talk swirls that it could also be voided altogether.

Arsenal's match against Brighton on Saturday, March 14 has already been postponed.

This was after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday night, March 12.

Arsenal cannot field players as they confirmed their first team squad and coaches would self-isolate.

The team's other fixtures on the scheduled dates might also be missed.

Emergency meeting

The Premier League has called an emergency meeting with its clubs on Friday, March 13 regarding future fixtures this season.

This was despite it having earlier declared that the weekend’s top-flight games would go ahead as planned.

The Guardian reported that it spoke to one unnamed club executive who said the season could be suspended for several weeks, while having the whole season voided could also be a possibility.

Pall over Liverpool's season

Whatever happens in the English league will no doubt cast a pall over Liverpool's red-hot streak this season.

They look likely to win the title this 2019/20 season with 27 wins out of 29 games played.

They currently have a 25-point lead at the top of the table with one extra game played.

The last time they won the league was in the 1989-90 season.

Italia Serie A considering three options

A few radical ideas from elsewhere in Europe have since been thrown into the open on how to round up the remaining football season.

The Italian Serie A is contemplating three options.

1. Serie A null and void

This first option is to declare no winner of Serie A, effectively a void year.

2. Juventus named champions

This option would formally end the season at this point.

Winners and the bottom three teams to be relegated will also be decided at this juncture of their league campaign.

3. Play-off time

The third option will have two separate play-off tournaments, one for the title and the other for relegation.

The teams in the middle of the table would be unaffected.

Covid-19 wreaking havoc in sports

On Thursday it was reported that Manchester City defender, Benjamin Mendy, is self-isolating after a family member fell ill.

Three Leicester players have also undergone tests for Covid-19 after experiencing symptoms.

The Premier League is currently the only major top-flight league in Europe not to shut down or close its doors because of Covid-19.

Top divisions in Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Ireland and the United States have all been suspended amid the outbreak.

The German Bundesliga and France’s Ligue 1 are holding matches behind closed doors.
