Eventually caving in to their fears, Malaysians ended up panic buying groceries at Tesco and Giant on March 16, 2020, as they collectively gave in to their fear of Covid-19 and the lockdown affecting supplies as Malaysia closed its borders.

This occurred more than a month after Singaporeans panic bought groceries on Feb. 7.

Malaysians sprung into action and raced down the aisles of supermarkets even before Malaysia Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on March 16 officially announced a lockdown of the country.

The usual items swept up during panic buying included instant noodles and toilet paper.

Mass buying of groceries continued on March 17.

The car park outside a supermarket was filled with vehicles on a weekday morning.

Aware of how ridiculousness they look now, Malaysians took to social media to call out fellow Malaysians for hoarding, as Malaysians had previously mocked Singaporeans for panic buying.

This collective behaviour prompted the defence ministry in Malaysia to sound out, informing the public not to panic.
