Italy is currently under a nationwide lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 situation.

The country currently has 63,928 cases of the virus, with the death toll standing at 6,077 after 602 new deaths were reported on Mar. 23, Aljazeera reported.

In addition, the army has also been deployed to Lombardy to enforce the lockdown in the epicentre of Italy's Covid-19 outbreak

However, it would appear that there are some Italians who are still defying the lockdown measure, which has provoked a furious reaction from several of Italy's mayors.

Video of angry Italian mayors goes viral

On Mar. 23, the president of Eurasia Group, Ian Bremmer, shared a video of several Italian mayors slamming citizens who broke the lockdown order to head outside for a variety of reasons.

In case you can't see the video:

These include:

  • The President of the Campania region, Vincenzo De Luca, threatening to send over "police with flamethrowers" to Italians who intend to hold graduation parties amidst the Covid-19 outbreak,
  • The Mayor of the town of Gualdo Tadino, Massimiliano Presciutti, stating,"Where the f**k are you all going? You and your dogs, which must have an inflamed prostate?”
  • Antonio Decaro, the Mayor of the city of Bari, telling two Italian residents to,"Go home, you can't play ping pong, go to your Playstations. You're not allowed to be here, go play at home with your Playstations."
  • Antonio Tutolo, the Mayor of the city of Lucera, slamming people who head to mobile hairdressers, stating, "Getting in mobile hairdressers? What the f**k is that for? Who the f**k even supposed to see you?"

Some Italians are still moving about despite the severity of the lockdown measures

Both The Guardian and CNN reported that there are Italians who have not heeded the lockdown order, with the country's mayors adding that they have seen people exercising outdoors, gathering for games and walking their dogs.

On Mar. 23, Italy's interior ministry stated that 92,637 citizens have been charged for breaking the new regulations since the lockdown was first enforced.

This is despite the lockdown measures banning any movement within the country, and requiring citizens to fill a self-declaration form for justifying their reason to leave home, with work, health issues and heading to the supermarket being the only valid reasons.

Italian police officers have since come across citizens who were doing something else despite writing "going shopping" on their forms.

Campania's President, De Luca, has suggested that the Italian military could be deployed outside of Lombardy to help enforce the lockdown.

CNN quoted him as adding,"If we go on like this we will just be counting the dead. We won't have hospital spaces for your father and mothers. Is that clear?"
