Italy has reported close to 4,670 new Covid-19 cases and 627 new deaths in a single day on March 20.

The increase in deaths in the country is by far the highest for a single day in the past four weeks of the Covid-19 outbreak.

This brings the total number of cases in Italy to 47,021.

The total death toll has surpassed 4,000 at 4,032.

A total of 5129 patients have been discharged from the hospitals.

Army deployed to enforce lockdown

On March 20, the country's total death cases exceeded China's fatalities.

The president of Lombardy, the Covid-19 epicentre in Italy, announced that the army will be deployed there to enforce the lockdown, Reuters reported.

Since the lockdown has been implemented, the situation in Lombardy has not improved significantly as Covid-19 cases continue to increase.

Some 114 soldiers will be on the ground in Lombardy to ensure residents comply with the restrictions.
