(Editor's note on March 16, 4:44pm: The article has been amended to reflect the right fatal incident involving Mandeep Kumar. Mandeep died from a fatal incident that happened on March 11 at Keppel Shipyard, not the one that happened on February 24 at 11 Shipyard Crescent.)
A 36-year-old Indian national was involved in a fatal accident on March 11 at Keppel Shipyard.
Carrying out maintenance works before being crushed
A spokesman for the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said the fatal incident happened on 51 Pioneer Sector 1 on March 11, 2020.
A group of workers was installing a rudder at the rear of a marine vessel when the rudder swung and hit one of them.
The worker, a 36-year-old Indian national, fell to the ground and was pronounced dead at the scene by attending paramedics, the statement added.
Keppel Shipyard Limited is both the occupier and employer.
MOM is investigating and has stopped the installation of rudders across the yard.
Worker worked in S'pore for 12 years & was a father of two young children
According to a Facebook post by ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), the 36-year-old man who died from this incident was known as Mandeep Kumar:
"This young man is Mandeep Kumar. We understand he was crushed to death in a shipyard by an extremely heavy piece of metal two days ago. We haven’t slept much since we got the heart-breaking news last night. He came to work here 12 years ago and now leaves in a coffin. His remains will be flown back to his family including two young children early tomorrow morning.
Mandeep: May your children grow up to bright futures and may your blessings always shine on them from heaven. Thank you for everything you did for Singapore. We are sorry you had to leave this way. RIP young man"
In the post, IRR highlighted the heartbreaking fact that Mandeep "came to work in Singapore 12 years ago and is now leaving Singapore in a coffin".
The post also highlighted that Mandeep was a father to two young children and wished the best for the future of his children.
Family of worker to receive items donated by S'poreans
In an appeal by IRR for baby items for the family of a Bangladeshi worker who has been infected with Covid-19, Singaporeans generously donated to help the pregnant wife back in Bangladesh by donating 33 boxes worth of baby items.
As there was an overwhelming amount of support and items donated, IRR decided to sort and send excess items to the family of Mandeep and another foreign worker who lost their lives in workplace accidents, with the help of Singapore Post.
Volunteers, who were packing the items for the families, teared up knowing that Mandeep's young children would not get to see their father again despite his efforts to make their lives better for them by working in Singapore.
