A verbal exchange involving a condominium resident and a security personnel was caught on video and circulated online, which has since led to the resident receiving hundreds of prank calls within a day.
The video shows a man who is a resident of Eight Riversuites condominium in Boon Keng/ Whampoa area -- who identified himself by name -- arguing and shouting vulgarities at the security officer allegedly over a rule set by the condominium's management that visitors of residents need to pay S$10 to use the car park.
Throughout the altercation, the security officer remained calm, reminding the resident that he is merely enforcing the rules.
"Don't be angry," the security personnel said at one point, while trying to calm down the irate condominium dweller.
The Security Association Singapore (SAS) has since come out in support of the security officer.
Calm and focused
In a statement, the president of the SAS, Raj Joshua Thomas, said that "SAS applauds the professionalism of the officer".
Thomas noted that the officer remained "calm and focused on his job throughout" the incident.
The association's president used the incident to remind the public of the "key role" that security officers play in enforcing in-house rules set by condominium management.
"Residents like the resident in the video often try to flout the rules and take out their frustrations on security officers.
This results in many incidents of verbal and physical abuse of security officers who are merely trying to do their job."
Thomas added that security officers should not be used as "punching bags for residents to take out their frustrations on".
Doxxing and harassment of the resident
Another issue that has surfaced pertains to the act of doxxing the irate resident after the release of the video online.
The video, which was uploaded on social media and spread through chat apps, revealed the resident's address and phone number, which were clearly audible in the video that captured the verbal exchange.
One local online publisher has even embedded the uncensored video in its article that also contained clear visuals of the resident's face.
Circulation of the uncensored video has resulted in the man allegedly receiving more than 200 threatening phone calls.
"The security was smart to take a video and share it in all social media forums," he wrote in a comment in the closed Facebook group for Eight Riversuites condominium residents.
Responding to queries from Mothership about the video of the resident being uploaded online after it was allegedly shot by the security personnel, Thomas said: "Members of the public and security officers should comply with the law and personal data protection regulations when taking and uploading such video."
He also cautioned against "any vigilantism or doxxing against the resident in the video".
It is understood that a police report has been made regarding the incident between resident and the security officer.
