At the centre of an eventful Deepavali weekend, a video of a condominium resident having a verbal dispute with his estate's security guard has gone viral online, resulting in the resident receiving over 200 threatening calls.

Response from security agencies

On Saturday (Oct. 26), the Security Association Singapore (SAS) released an official statement, praising the security officer's professionalism at handling the incident.

Other security agencies have since come out with their own official statements on the matter.

General secretary of the Union of Security Employees (USE), Raymond Chin, said that USE was alerted to the incident on Saturday (Oct. 26) morning.

Chin added the incident was shared with USE's network of security officers, who have helped to carry the message further.

USE also shared the details of the incident with the police.

Abuse of security officers is condemned

Chin went on to remind the public that abuse of security officers is condemned.

"Whilst we empathise with the resident on his unhappiness with the rules of the estate, his right of recourse should be through his management committee.

The security officers are merely executing the requests of the committee.

We strongly condemn any form abuse of our security officers.

We encourage our officers to report any abuse they experience or witness to the union."

Chin added that the union stands united with its officers.

The president of Association of Certified Security Agencies (ACSA), Robert Wiener, applauded the security officer for his reaction to the resident's outbursts.

Wiener said:

"We do not tolerate the abuse of our security officers whilst they are discharging their duties.

It is essential that the public understand that security staff are there representing the building owners and MCSTs and they have to enforce the by laws of the estate without fear or favour.

He also urged the “Attorney General’s office” to press for a deterrent sentence, in the event it should go to court.

Wiener also used this incident to remind the public to respect security personnels who are helping to keep neighbourhoods and estates safe and secure.

Response from condo's residents

When Mothership went down to Eight Riversuites condominium, where the dispute happened, the security personnel declined to reveal any additional information regarding the case.

Some of the residents expressed their shock and disbelief that the incident had occurred in such a "peaceful estate".

One of them said that he empathised with the resident who just wanted his visitors to feel welcomed during Deepavali, but he condemns the resident's behaviour, saying that "there are other ways to approach the issue".

A police report was apparently made on Saturday (Oct. 26) by one of the security officers.
