On Sept. 5, a World Cup qualifier match that saw Malaysia trump Indonesia 3-2, ended with a clash between fans of both countries, at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Jakarta.
Tensions built up throughout the match
Prior to the clash, Indonesian fans were seen forming a sign that said "F***K YOU LOSERS", in what looked like an attempt to provoke Malaysians.

In response, many Malaysian fans on social media celebrated their victory over Indonesia.

Malaysian fans at the stadium allegedly attacked
But Malaysian fans at the stadium supposedly faced a precarious situation after the match ended.
A Facebook post by the Utusan Online alleged that they were pelted with stones by angry Indonesian fans.
Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was among those stuck in the stadium after the match, although his press secretary later clarified that they were safe.During the match, Indonesian fans also threw missiles onto the pitch, which led the match to be stopped when the score was tied 2-2.
They also clashed with security personnel outside the Bung Karno stadium, which led the authorities to contain the crowd with tear gas.
Indonesian Sports Minister personally apologised to Syed Saddiq
Indonesia's Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi personally apologised to Syed Saddiq and called for police action, Malaysiakini reported.
Imam said:
"I would like to apologise on behalf of the people of Indonesia and the government to minister Syed Saddiq for the behaviour of some supporters.
The Indonesia-Malaysia friendship should not be ruined due to football rivalry and we will continue to monitor the situation. The police must act against the supporters who committed the damage."
An Instagram story shared by Syed Saddiq stated that they had also discussed the incident at their meeting.
Translation: "Meeting with @nahrawi_imam to discuss the best solution for yesterday's incident."
Syed Saddiq further added that he appreciated Imam's gesture and reaffirmed the ties between Malaysia and Indonesia.
He stated:
"We appreciate the firm stand taken by the Indonesian government. I also received a (personal) explanation from Imam. We are still close friends and we make sure that our hospitality is maintained.
Although firm action will be taken against those who committed these acts, we need to work together to resolve this issue together."
The Malaysian minister has since filed a formal report with the Indonesian authorities.
