The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is saddened by the passing of the 65-year-old cyclist who collided with a personal mobility device (PMD) rider in Bedok.
In an official statement, the agency said that it is investigating the case, together with the Police, for offences under the Active Mobility Act and Penal Code.
LTA added that the PMD that collided with the late Ong Bee Eng's bicycle was a non-compliant device which exceeded the weight and width limit for use on public paths.
The PMD, which was ridden by a 20-year-old male, was also unregistered. The rider has been arrested by the Police.
If the PMD rider is convicted of riding a non-compliant PMD on a public path, he faces a maximum fine of S$5,000 and/or three-month imprisonment.
LTA said:
"LTA’s regulations on PMD speed limits and device criteria to ensure path safety have been in place since May 2018. We have zero tolerance towards those who show flagrant disregard for our regulations and endanger public safety."
For causing death by rash act under Section 304A of the Penal Code, the rider faces an imprisonment term of up to five years and a fine.
Passed away after going into coma
After the accident, Ong had been in a coma and was on life support at Changi General Hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
Apart from sustaining severe brain injuries, she also suffered multiple fractures. She passed away four days later.
Ong's death sparked renewed petitions for PMDs to be banned in Singapore.
