A Norwegian man has been granted bail after he was charged with manslaughter for allegedly strangling a British man to death in front of his Singaporean wife in Phuket, Thailand.

Roger Bullman, 54, was granted bail of 400,000 baht (S$18,143).

He faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.

Norwegian tourist Roger Bullman, 54, returned to the police station for questioning.

What happened

The incident occurred during a fight between Bullman and Amitpal Singh Bajaj, 34, at the Centara Grand resort in Karon, Phuket on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Amitpal was with his Singaporean wife Bandhna Kaur Bajaj, and their two-year-old son.

The deceased was a British man.

He was a Singapore-based IT consultant.

The couple were married for nine years, Singapore media reported.

The trip was only their second vacation since the birth of their 20-month-old son, Veer.

How fight allegedly started

Bullman, staying in an adjacent room to the family, was singing on his balcony in the wee hours of the morning.

He was confronted by Amitpal about the noise.

Police said Bullman kicked down the door on the balcony separating the two rooms and the two men fought.

Amitpal urged his wife to grab their son and run as Bullman lunged at him, placed him in a choke-hold, and released him only when security was called to the scene, according to media reports.

Amitpal was then taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to AFP, Karon police major Techin Deethongon, said: "They fought, and because of his military background the Norwegian strangled the victim."

"He confessed and said he did not think his act would cause the victim to die."

Bullman claimed that he put Amitpal into a chokehold to stop him from moving but did not intend to kill him.

Bullman was also charged with invasion of property.

A long-time friend has questioned Thai media reports that said Mr Amitpal had confronted Bullman before the attack.

Amitpal was cremated on Saturday, Aug. 24.
