The Malaysian government will be increasing the allowance for its interns starting from Sept. 1, 2019.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday, Aug. 15.

Interns at the Malaysian government are currently paid RM15 (S$5) a day.

The change will see their allowance be increased to RM45 (S$15) a day, or RM900 (S$300) a month.

Saddiq said in his video that the increase in allowance is "very good", considering how it rose from no payment at all to RM15 (S$5) a day, and then to an expected RM45 (S$15) a day.

A step forward

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the increase in allowance is a step forward in providing all youth in government ministries with more internship experiences without getting hindered by their economic status.
