Chinese officials must not make use of the country's anti-corruption drive as an excuse to remain idle and "spend the whole day eating", Chinese President Xi Jinping told a group of senior Communist Party leaders on Tuesday, July 9.
My campaign is not your excuse not to work
According to official state-run media Xinhua, Xi pointed out that it is important to handle correctly the relationship between being clean and taking up responsibilities.
Here's a rough translation of what he said, as reported by Xinhua:
"Officials must be willing to pick up and bear heavy responsibilities, put in the hard work, and not be afraid to confront tricky problems.
They must fulfil modern standards of a good official, to not turn a blind eye to politics or do things half-heartedly.
They must not spend the whole day eating and be idle, pass the buck on to others, stop improving on themselves, misuse their authority, or be greedy."
Don't think that keeping a low profile works
Since launching his anti-corruption campaign in 2012, Xi has frequently chastised officials who think they can avoid punishment by keeping their heads down, according to Reuters.
They do this by simply not doing their jobs or not making any decision that they might be accountable for.
Xi's anti-corruption drive has seen many officials, from low-ranking "flies" to high-ranking "tigers", get thrown in jail.
Notable figures sentenced to life in jail for corruption include Fang Fenghui, a former Chief of Joint staff in the People's Liberation Army, and Zhou Yongkang, a former member of the Politburo Standing Committee -- China's top decision-making body.
