Game of Thrones had its last episode streamed worldwide on May 20, 2019, bringing the eight-year series to a close.

But people in China were not able to watch it.

Tencent Video could not play video

Millions of Chinese users who rely on streaming platform Tencent Video could not access the video -- and were outraged.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a message that read “transmission medium problems” appeared in lieu of the finale.

It turns out Tencent was restricted from airing the episode by the Chinese government because of ongoing trade disputes with the United States.

This was after WSJ quoted an HBO spokesperson saying the network had no issue with transmitting the episode.

Trade war toll

Fans not being able to watch Game of Thrones is an example of how everyday people are being affected by the ongoing trade war between US and China.

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows in China.

The season has been viewed more than “550 million times on Tencent Video during the most recent season,” WSJ reported.

But the absence of the last episode on Tencent Video did not stop the determined Chinese audience from accessing it.

The episode did make its way to piracy sites when it was unavailable to stream via Tencent Video.

Adds to tension
