GrabHitch driver implies that rider is poor, rider asks driver to get "proper education"

Oh no.

We have written several stories about unpleasant GrabHitch experiences, both for the driver and the rider:

And here's another story that fits the bill.

Rider prefers not to share

On Jan. 17, a post was put up on community Facebook page Uber & Grab Drivers Singapore.

The photo is a collage of two things: A screenshot of the rider's profile (censored by us), and a screenshot of the text conversation between the driver and the rider.

From the screenshot, the rider's name appears to be Jermaine, while the driver's identity was not revealed.

Here's a breakdown of the sequence of events:

  • Jermaine booked a GrabHitch trip from Tampines Ave 1 to Yishun Ring Road on Jan. 17 for 6.10pm.
  • This GrabHitch ride would typically cost S$14.
  • The anonymous GrabHitch driver accepted the request.
  • Jermaine then asked the driver via text if the booking has been confirmed, and if there will be any other passengers on the same trip.
  • The driver then replied to Jermaine, "Yes confirmed. You cannot share? You are taking a subsidised ride called hitch."
  • Jermaine then replied: "I would prefer not. If you want to share then I can just cancel."

Tells rider to take a bus

Things then took a turn for the worse when the driver agreed to cancel the ride and suggested Jermaine take a "proper ride" like Grab or take the bus if she "cannot afford".

As a reply, Jermaine told the driver to "do as many Grab" to afford a proper education and told him to wait for his warning from Grab.

But the driver pointed out that he is just a GrabHitch driver and he doesn't "owe them a living".

Polarising reactions

The post has since garnered more than 700 shares and over 40 comments from Singaporean netizens.

Some shared the same sentiments as the driver:

While others thought that the driver was at fault for triggering a reaction out of the rider.

And some felt that both parties were in the wrong:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just a social carpooling platform

For the uninitiated, GrabHitch is a social carpooling platform where non-commercial drivers give riders a lift along the way.

The fee is supposed to cover petrol costs.

While most GrabHitch rides usually involve just one rider, the driver can choose to pick up other riders going the same way.

However, according to Grab, a driver is encouraged to check with riders if they are comfortable with sharing and to inform them of expected delays in arrival times.
