One Singaporean, Rudy Dil, ushered in the new year with an unfortunate incident.

According to a Facebook post on Jan. 1, he said his car got stolen when he drove in to Malaysia on New Year's Eve.

Car got stolen at AEON

Rudy claimed that he parked at AEON (a mall in Johor Bahru) at around 1pm, and around 6.30pm, he realised that his car was missing.

A police report was made in both JB and Singapore, but Rudy stated that "investigations can only be done by the Malaysian police".

His car is a silver Toyota Wish, with the car plate number SJJ 9285P.

As of 8am on Jan. 1, Rudy posted an update from the Malaysian authorities saying that the CCTVs at AEON were not working. Hence, they were unable to "retrieve any info for car exits".

"Traffic cameras around Bukit Indah (are) also not functioning so (it's) difficult to track," he added.

But despite everything that happened, Rudy seemed to take things in his stride:

"To the people who did it, I take it that you needed the car more than we did. That the clothes in our luggage will cover you more than it will on us and the groceries that we bought will feed you more than it will on us."

"Please buy travel insurance"

In his post, Rudy said that he and his family never thought that this could happen to them.

Urging others not to be complacent, he stressed the importance of buying travel insurance even if they're going across the causeway for "just a few hours":

"Please buy travel insurance next time you decide to drive across the causeway. Even if it's just a few hours makan session or a one night staycation. We got complacent and didn't get any travel insurance cos we never thought it could happen to us, but it did."
