Want to speed on footpaths with your e-scooter? LTA says "nope". 10km/h speed limit to kick in from Feb. 1.

No more zooming e-scooters?

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced in a Jan. 18 Facebook post a slew of new rules for Personal Mobility Device users and cyclists.

The rules are part of a set of recommendations by the Active Mobility Advisory Panel in September 2018.

These are the new rules that will commence on Feb. 1 2019:

  1. Speed limit for riding on footpaths will be lowered from 15km/h to 10km/h
  2. Cyclists to use helmets when riding on roads
  3. Active mobility device users to “stop and look” out for vehicles at road crossings. Motorists will also need to slow down and look out for pedestrians and active mobility users at road crossings
  4. A maximum device speed of 10km/h for motorised Personal Mobility Aids such as motorised wheelchairs and mobility scooters

10km/h not popular

The new speed limit may be a welcome change for pedestrians.

However, some questioned the feasibility of the lowered speed limit.

Others felt that pedestrians also have a part to play:
