Jose Mourinho, one of the most successful managers in football history, has been sacked from his post as manager of Manchester United Football Club.

The club's official Twitter account made the announcement at around 6:00 pm (Singapore time) on Dec. 18.

Man U off the pace

Jose Mourinho is the third full-time manager to helm the Red Devils since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Despite early promise, Mourinho could not win the Champions League or Premier League with Manchester United, like his predecessors Louis Van Gaal and David Moyes.

Following a 3-1 defeat to fierce rivals Liverpool on Dec. 16, Mourinho's men languish in sixth place in the league, a whopping 19 points behind Liverpool in first place.

His tenure at Manchester United, despite winning the League Cup and Europa League, has often made headlines for public spats with star players such as World Cup-winner Paul Pogba.

As of the time of this writing, the club has not announced who will replace Mourinho.

Glittering track record

Mourinho has enjoyed enormous success in European football, with his Champions League victory in 2004 with Portuguese club Porto FC an early highlight.

He then moved on to Chelsea FC, where he won two Premier League titles and a number of domestic cups before leaving for Italian giants Inter Milan.

Mourinho achieved more success in Italy, winning two Serie A titles and another Champions League title at Inter.

His next job was with Real Madrid in Spain, where he won a La Liga title.

Mourinho then returned to England with another spell at Chelsea and won a third Premier League title, before being hired by Manchester United in 2016.
