Mala, the tongue-numbing Chinese delicacy is all the rage in Singapore right now.

So it's no surprise that there are several halal versions of the oily, spicy sauce in Singapore, including the ones at Peppercorn.

Halal mala in Bugis

Peppercorn is a newly-opened eatery in Kandahar Street selling halal-certified malatang (numbing and spicy soup).

Like most mala eateries, customers can pick their selection of ingredients for their mala and get it weighed.

Peppercorn offers the typical mala favourites like chicken luncheon meat, lotus root and mushrooms as well as fresh ingredients like peeled prawns, sliced fish and beef slices.

Then, you can choose from one of the four spice levels that they offer, from no spice to very spicy and can opt to have it as a soupy or dry version.

Customers can also customise their soup after ordering, with these condiments to suit their taste.

Carbs like udon, rice or instant noodles can also be added at an additional S$2.

Here's what the mala at Peppercorn looks like:

Thinking about spicy mala 麻辣 broth to kick up that rainy day. So there are plenty of mala stir fry specialty stalls, but one specialising in mala soup - this is a first for my try. They do the dry 香锅 too, but stick with the soup that is the specialty. 💫 The concept is similar to your Xiang Guos otherwise: pick your favourite ingredients and the price is determined by weight. Spice meter wise, the medium here was quite modest so for all of you who always take 中辣, don’t be afraid to go for the high level. #peppercorn30 #bugis #麻辣 #herpenandfork #sgblogger #sgfoodie #8dayseat #burpple #vscofood #openricesg #cafehoppingsg #instafood #instafood_sg #onthetable #stfoodtrending

Side dishes from S$4.50

Apart from the usual mala, Peppercorn also offers side dishes like the scallion oil noodles (S$4.50), a noodle dish made from hand-pulled noodles, scallion oil, soy sauce and garnished with fresh and fried scallions:

And if you're up for something different, Peppercorn also serves chicken cutlet (S$5) with a side of mala-infused mayonnaise or some black fungus with vinegar.
