The Chinese mainstream newspapers in Singapore ran amok on Dec. 29 with their coverage of the SBS Transit CEO Gan Juay Kiat's alleged extra-marital affairs that resulted in his sudden resignation.

Both Lianhe Wanbao and Shinmin Daily News dedicated more than two pages and covered a bit of ground, to the extent of speaking to a family helper, a mere day after his resignation was announced on Dec. 28.

Here is what the two Chinese newspapers reported:

Lianhe Wanbao

SBS Transit CEO Gan Juay Kiat resigned suddenly due to "lapses in conduct".

A video, uploaded online the day before his resignation, implied and alleged that Gan had affairs with subordinates and a married woman.

This video is speculated to have led to or prompted his resignation.

Video footage

A "Private Investigator Singapore" Facebook post alleged the 61-year-old's affairs with a few subordinates and a married woman occurred within a span of a month or so.

The video uploaded by the same page alleged that the man shown was Gan, and allegedly showed him having rendezvous with the different women in Singapore and overseas.

This is despite the characters in the video being censored, leaving their identities unconfirmed.

The post alleged that the encounters filmed between Gan and the women happened during office hours and over weekends.

The video only showed the venues as being at different locations, such as a cafe, restaurant and hotel lobby.

The video also showed the hotel staff ushering a couple into a white car.

Taking responsibility

In response to media queries, Gan confirmed he has resigned on Friday morning and will relinquish his role officially three months later.

He did not give a reason for his resignation, but only highlighted that he will be responsible for his own conduct as the top management of the company.

Gan and his wife have children and they are all adults.

There are people within the industry who find that it is a pity that a dedicated and low-key executive such as Gan has to resign, due to extramarital affair as the reason.

Shin Min Daily News

A Shin Min reporter managed to reach out to the private investigator who made the footage public.

But the PI declined to reveal his or her name.

The PI said that even though the video footage was shared publicly, it was censored so as to reduce the impact on the family members of the people involved.

Married woman involved

Another informant also tipped off Shin Min that the person that Gan was having an affair with is a married woman, who is aged around 30 to 40 years old.

The informant also revealed that when the affair was exposed, Gan wanted to meet this woman he was having an affair with, in the hopes of reducing the impact from this exposé.

Location of hotel

Shin Min also managed to find out that the hotel lobby that was shown in the video is a four-star hotel in the east of Singapore.

The cost per night is about S$200.

Hotel booking record

The PI also claimed that he or she also has the CEO’s hotel booking record and that Gan has room bookings till next June at this hotel.

A Shin Min reporter even went to the hotel, and there were hotel staff there who found the male character in the video familiar.

Who hired PI?

The PI told Shin Min that he or she was hired by someone a few months ago to carry out the investigation.

The PI has received the consent of the client to make the video public.

The PI decline to reveal who the client is to protect the client’s privacy.

However, the PI revealed that the client is not Gan’s wife.

Confident of identity

The PI claimed that sufficient evidence has been collected over the course of a few months, so he or she is not afraid of getting sued for defamation.

The PI also mentioned that all the evidence has been handed to the client.

Staking out at Gan's home

Gan’s wife reported to work as per normal in the morning, according to a Shin Min reporter who visited the Gan's residential premises.

Gan's wife declined to comment.

She smiled at the Shin Min reporter when she left the house at 8am and told the reporter that she was going to work.

The marriage registry, which is publicly accessible, showed that Gan and his wife were married in 1983 for the past 35 years.

They have three sons and they are all adults.

Talked to family helper

Shin Min did manage to interview the family helper, who described the relationship between Gan and his wife as loving and harmonious.

She did not hear them quarrel recently and they have been loving all this while.

The helper also said that Gan has already gone overseas.

Neighbours also revealed they did not hear any quarrel from the Gan household.

Shin Min > Wanbao

In comparison, Shin Min clearly covered more ground than Wanbao.

It was not previously made known the full extent and context of Gan's extra-marital relationship.

Mothership.sg has reached out to SBS Transit for comment regarding the allegations that Gan had affairs with subordinates, but did not receive a response.
