Lawrence Wong made quite the wave in Singapore a few years ago.
His performance in The Promise back in 2009 netted him a nomination for Favourite Male Character during the 2010 Star Awards.
He would eventually lose out to Nat Ho.
While he found further success in TV shows such as 118, he never really got the big break he probably deserved.
So he left to try and make it in a larger, but empirically tougher scene. China.
Breakout
While the initial stages were tough, he found some success as a lead in the Chinese drama Love and Passion.
But his undeniable breakout role came in the form of the period drama juggernaut Yanxi Palace.
Here are some of the things we've written on it.
He plays Hai Lan Cha, an imperial guard who throughout all the backstabbing and further backstabbing remains a thoroughly unaffected and decent human being.
His role earned him plaudits from all over.
And it turns out, some awards.
Most Promising
The first of his two awards came at the 2018 Asian-American Television and Film Festival Golden Oak Awards.
There he nabbed the most promising actor award.
A turnaround for his career best encapsulated in the man's own words.
I was once so lost in my career, but now I’m “Asia Most Promising Actor”!
A few days later, he clinched yet another award, this time at the Chinese American TV Festival.
He thanked his mom, who had passed away two years ago.
Look mum, i got an award again, at the 14th Chinese American TV Festival “Best Supporting Actor”. i hope you can see this and be proud of me. ?
It is to be noted that the two festivals focus mainly on Chinese offerings from China, but still, what a turnaround.
