On October 7, Singaporean man Yang ShiMing uploaded a video on Facebook of a Land Transport Authority (LTA) officer and himself, in conflict over a taxi driver who had allegedly been beaten up.

According to Yang, the LTA officer had insisted on summoning the taxi driver, who was at the time lying on the road and waiting for an ambulance.

Here's the video, which has since gathered more than 1,400 shares and 200 comments:

What happened in the video

Here's a summary of what happened in the 45-second video:

  • The camera man (presumably Yang), speaking to the officer, tells him: "Hi? As I mentioned ah, the taxi driver is down there, lying on the road, ok?
  • Camera man backs away when the officer appears to attempt to capture him on record.
  • What appears to be a police officer runs towards them, calling "Sir! Sir!"
  • The police officer is seen speaking to the LTA officer, gesturing to where he came from. The audio cannot be heard as the camera man retreats.
  • The camera man approaches them again, and says, "And by the way, Sir, don't double standard ah. 1027 also. Ok? Don't double standard!"
  • While the camera man was speaking, the LTA officer was also talking to two police officers (one more had appeared), saying "I should do this thing, because they are -- they are --
  • One of the police officers palms the camera man away.

Yang subsequently shared a screenshot in the comments, allegedly about the extent of the taxi driver's injuries:

Singaporeans angry

In response to the post, a number of Singaporeans felt injustice on behalf of the taxi driver:

Some, on the other hand, felt that the LTA officer was just doing his job:

And that the summon could be waived:

LTA: Summon waived

In response to queries by Mothership, LTA has clarified that the enforcement officer did not see the taxi driver on the scene, and therefore carried out his duty to issue a summon on the unattended taxi.

He was then approached by a member of the public who informed him of the taxi driver's injuries.

LTA has since verified that the taxi driver was indeed injured, and waived the summon.

Statement in full:

At the time of issuing the summons, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) enforcement officer did not see the taxi driver on the scene, and therefore carried out his duties to issue the summons on the unattended taxi. The LTA enforcement officer was subsequently approached by a member of the public who informed that the driver of the taxi had been injured. LTA has since verified this and has already waived the summon. We wish the taxi driver a speedy recovery.
