The Johor royal family is doing their part to redistribute resources in the state.

They have announced they are going to supply affordable housing for Johoreans who fall below a certain threshold.

Affordable terrace houses

The project will see three-bedroom terrace houses going for as little as RM70,000 (S$23,186) each.

Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the crown prince of Johor, announced the scheme on Facebook on Sunday, Oct. 21.

He said it is an effort by the state's royal family to "ease the burden of the people".

The non-profit project is called "Rumah Impian Bangsa Johor".

Catered to the less well-off

The price of a single-storey unit will start at RM70,000, while double-storey units will go for under RM200,000 (S$66,248).

Double-storey terrace houses come with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Other amenities in the project to be funded by the sultan and the crown prince include a multi-purpose hall, a park, shops and a motel.

The eligibility criteria favours those with fewer means of owning their own place.

Applicants must be a Johorean, have never been a home owner, and must not be an eldest or only child, and the applicant's household income should be below RM5,000 (S$1,656).

Tunku Ismail also said the sultan's intention is to build a strong social spirit: "His Majesty Sultan of Johor decrees for a fair distribution amongst Malays, Chinese and Indians."

Selection process

The selection process for applicants will be implemented with a computerised vetting system by Malaysia's economic affairs planning unit (UPEN).

The selection committee will include the Secretary of State and board members from the Sultan Ibrahim Foundation.
