Facebook user Suraiyah K Abdulla uploaded the following video of pigeons dying at the foot of an HDB block:

Suraiyah mentioned the term "modern-day genocide" followed by a question mark.

She further questioned why people couldn't just "co-exist" with the pigeons.

Not the first time in her neighbourhood

In response to a comment, she shared that the birds were fed "bread with poison".

According to Suraiyah, this is the second time she has seen such acts within the span of two months.

Mixed response

The video, which now has over 1,000 shares, contained many angry comments quest.

However, there were others who tried to explain why the pigeons might have had to be culled, most likely due to complaints from the residents of the neighbourhood.

One even shared her unpleasant experience with pigeons.

Pigeon population control not uncommon

In case you didn't know, this isn't the first time pigeons have been culled in HDB estates.

Culling is usually carried out in response to persistent feedback from residents on their concern for health and environmental hygiene:

Pigeon droppings contaminate food

According to a Channel NewsAsia article, the main factors contributing to pigeon population growth were people actively feeding pigeons as well as food litter.

Pigeon droppings can contaminate food and drink, which in turn could cause food poisoning.

Pigeons can also cause psittacosis in humans, an infection caused by inhaling airborne particles found in respiratory secretions of infected birds. Psittacosis shows symptoms similar to typhoid fever.
