On the afternoon of Sept. 19, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) announced that former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was arrested at 4.13pm and taken in for questioning at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

The arrest was made in relation to the funneling of RM2.6 billion of 1MDB funds into his personal bank account.

He is expected to be charged in court on Sept. 20 at 3pm under Malaysia's anti-corruption act.

Here's the MACC's statement, translated from Malay:

"The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd. Najib Abdul Razak in connection to the 1MDB case and the depositing of RM2.6 billion into his personal account. The case has attracted the attention of the local and international community.

The arrest was made this afternoon at 4.13pm at the MACC Headquarters, Putrajaya. Mohd. Najib will face several charges under Section 23 (1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 after obtaining approval from the Attorney-General's Chambers. Mohd. Najib will be taken to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Sept 20, 2018, at 3.00 pm to be charged in court.

The MACC will also work with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to interview Mohd. Najib before he is to be brought to court tomorrow to assist the police investigation under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001."

Hasn't Najib been arrested before?

Yes, Najib has been arrested before on July 3, where he was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of abuse of power.

This was in relation to an investigation over funds of about RM42 million (S$14.16 million) that allegedly went from SRC International, into his personal bank account.

He pleaded not guilty and paid bail with the help of some supporters.

Najib was also hit with additional charges related to money-laundering on August 8.

He also pleaded not guilty to those charges.

Since then, until his current arrest, Najib had spent his time poking the new Malaysian government on social media.

His statement with the Malaysian police on Sept. 20 is expected to assist in the ongoing investigations of his other charges.
