LTA wants your ideas on future of land transport, ready in 2040

More effective than being keyboard warrior on Facebook.

People these days have a lot to say about public transport, or basically transport in general.

From the reliability of our trains to the bane that is personal mobility devices - Singaporeans can really get talking online and offline.

Public consultation for future of land transport

Which is why the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) Land Transport Master Plan (LTMP) 2040 Public Consultation Document (PCD) comes at such an apt moment for all.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Janil Puthucheary launched the public engagement for the LTMP today, in an event that was witnessed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

The LTMP is LTA's roadmap for the future of Singapore's land transport for 2040 and beyond.

LTA has also appointed an LTMP Advisory Panel, chaired by SMS Janil and comprising of 14 other representatives, ranging from political office-holders, unionists, academics and industry experts.

An example of a previous LTA roadmap is the LTMP 2013, which aimed to build a more interconnected, people-centered land transport system.

To that end, LTA has just completed building 200km of sheltered walkways under the $300 million Walk2Ride programme.

MRT stations, bus interchanges and other high-volume amenities are also equipped with sheltered walkways within a 400m radius to improve the walking experiences of commuters.

Post 2030, the priorities of land transport might change depending on the needs of commuters.

Therefore, LTA is inviting the public to provide ideas and feedback on the type of transport they want to see in the future.

They can do so by filling up the LTMP 2040 document.

In general, the document covers three broad themes:

  1. How to make "Walk Cycle Ride" the preferred way to travel and how to balance between comfort, choice, and speed.
  2. How to make "Walk Ride Cycle" more inclusive for all Singaporeans.
  3. How to create a land transport system that improves our quality of life.

If you're interested to submit your views and feedback, the document can be found here.

Do spare a few minutes for the feedback though, it is very comprehensive and can reach up to 35 questions, depending on the options you choose.

Here's a screenshot of the PCD:

However, we thought it is a small inconvenience to pay to have the opportunity to share our ideas legitimately instead of hammering them out in Facebook comments like keyboard warriors.

SG Mobility Gallery opens to public

At the same time, there are many different innovations that help Singapore achieve smarter urban mobility.

If you're interested, you can view some of these at LTA's SG Mobility Gallery.

The Gallery was launched by PM Lee today (September 19).

The Gallery makes use of technology to create a very rich and immersive experience experience for visitors.

For example, there is a 270-degree theatre which offers a panoramic view of the work that goes into running Singapore's land transport system.

There is also a life-size train gantry for visitors to try tapping in and out without the use of their fare cards. This is actually being trialled now in real life at selected MRT stations.

Visitors can also experience the work of technicians, and bus captains via Virtual Reality (VR) booths at the Gallery.
